NFHA Stands with Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NFHA Stands with Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Fair Housing Alliance® (NFHA™) stands with Federal Reserve Governor Dr. Lisa Cook as the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments in the Trump Administration’s unlawful attempt to remove her from her post.

The Trump Administration is attempting to remove the first Black woman to serve as governor in the Board’s 111-year history over unproven allegations. Gov. Cook brings a critically needed perspective to the Board as her substantial expertise is grounded in creating macroeconomic solutions to the kitchen table issues facing everyday Americans.

This attempt by the Trump Administration is the latest effort to effectively end the independence of the Federal Reserve amidst America’s deepening fair and affordable housing crisis. This act of presidential overreach must be checked by the nation’s High Court as it would endanger U.S. economic stability.

NFHA leadership joined Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, and House Democrats outside of the U.S. Supreme Court today to denounce the Administration’s attempt to wrongfully remove Governor Cook.

NFHA previously led a coalition of civil and human rights organizations in rebuking President Trump’s misguided attempt to remove Governor Cook.

“The President’s unlawful attempt to remove Governor Cook is a distraction at a time when Americans are demanding action in response to the country’s worsening fair and affordable housing crisis,” said Nikitra Bailey, NFHA Executive Vice President. “President Trump campaigned on delivering on affordability for the people of America. As the cost of housing continues to outpace wage growth, we call on the Trump Administration to join Dr. Cook in prioritizing the kitchen table issues concerning everyday people instead of working to replace her at a time when her perspective is needed most. NFHA stands firmly behind Governor Cook.”
