Statement of the National Fair Housing Alliance Regarding the Passing of Congressman John Lewis
Washington, D.C. — National Fair Housing Alliance President and CEO, Lisa Rice, issued the following statement on the passing of civil rights icon John Lewis:
“The National Fair Housing Alliance honors and celebrates the extraordinary life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis. News of his death and transition deeply saddens us. The world will miss this soldier and ambassador of equality. Congressman Lewis stated that he had been in ‘some kind of fight – for freedom, equality, basic human rights’ for nearly his entire life. The fair housing and civil rights movements, and indeed the nation and the world, are better off thanks to his fight.
Congressman Lewis was regarded as the Conscience of the Congress because of his never-ending commitment to justice, peace, and civil and human rights. Throughout his life, John Lewis taught us all the power of courage and perseverance in the face of seemingly unending darkness. He was a tireless advocate for equal housing and lending opportunities and supported the National Fair Housing Alliance in our effort to preserve fair housing tools like Disparate Impact and Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.
His gift to this country is great. We will forever be benefactors of his strength, sagacity, courage, and tenacity. The laws he helped write and pass will impact us for centuries to come. His wise counsel will live on in our hearts and minds. Today, and hereafter, we honor his legacy with an evergreen commitment to getting into ‘good trouble’ until his vision for a fair, just, and loving nation is fully realized.”
