Description: A landlord demands citizenship papers no law requires. A housing authority verifies status that it has no authority to verify. And a family stops answering the door out of fear of who may be on the other side. Immigrant families are losing housing not only related to aggressive ICE enforcement, but to fear-driven overcompliance by housing providers that has no basis in the law. Meanwhile, the housing providers going along with this overreach expose themselves to liability. Join housing and immigrant rights advocates for a practical discussion of where the law draws the line.

Panelists Include:

  • Carla Sanchez-Adams, Senior Attorney, National Consumer Law Center (NCLC)
  • Maddie Geschu, Director of Policy & Advocacy, Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) Coalition
  • Marie Claire Tran-Leung, Evictions Initiative Project Director, National Housing Law Project (NHLP)
  • Morgan Williams, Senior Counsel, National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA)
  • Scott Chang, Senior Counsel, National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA)

The National Housing Law Project will cut through the confusion on status verification requirements. The National Fair Housing Alliance will discuss the fair housing and other civil rights of immigrants. The National Consumer Law Center will address debanking and homeownership. And the Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition will frame how advocates can reach the households most at risk.

Start with our guidance memo, out now, which lays out what the law actually requires.
