Our Work
Fair Housing Data Mapping Tool
Where you live is more than just an address. That is because place is linked to opportunity. Where you live determines your access to fresh air, clean water, well-resourced schools, healthcare facilities, quality credit, healthy foods, reliable transportation, good jobs, quality internet service, and much more. Your zip code impacts your credit score, chances of attending college, health and educational outcomes, ability to buy a home—even how long you will live. In the U.S., too many people live in communities that are poorly resourced or have contaminated land, air, and water. These places hold back potential, rather than unlock a person’s ability to achieve economic security and share in the nation’s prosperity.
The Fair Housing Act of 1968 created protections and provided a pathway to a nation where everyone has fair access to opportunities and community resources needed to thrive. The Fair Housing Act is one of our most powerful tools to eliminate longstanding economic and societal barriers and create a flourishing, inclusive economy.
Too often, these barriers remain hidden in plain sight, and communities lack the data required to chart a path toward fair and resilient housing opportunities. To help fill that gap, the National Fair Housing Alliance and the Urban Institute joined forces to create the Fair Housing Data Mapping Tool.
This interactive tool will empower community members and decision-makers with the information needed to identify where patterns of segregation align with a lack of critical resources. The tool will also help communities tailor solutions that expand housing choice for people that have been historically or are currently being excluded from opportunity. The tool includes data on many factors that relate to housing access: transportation, environment, education, jobs and labor market indicators, as well as housing affordability. Our goal is to give communities the tools they need to understand housing barriers and advocate for directing community resources toward creating fair, inclusive growth for every household.
