Civil and Human Rights Coalition Denounces Trump’s Unlawful Attempt to Remove Gov. Lisa Cook

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A coalition of civil and human rights advocates have issued a joint statement denouncing President Trump’s unlawful attempt to remove Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook. The full statement reads:

“In an attempt to fire Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook, the President is targeting an eminently qualified, well-regarded macroeconomist who was confirmed to the post with bipartisan support. Dr. Cook is also the first Black woman to serve on the Board in its 111-year history.

The effort to terminate her seriously threatens the critical independence of the Fed, which Congress created by statute over 100 years ago. President Trump’s actions are unlawful and present a threat to our nation’s economy.

The President does not have the power to fire a Federal Reserve Board Governor without cause. And in the U.S., the Constitution and our laws matter. We must all stand together against this abuse of power and not allow President Trump to force out a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors with unsubstantiated allegations. This action undermines the rule of law, fairness, and due process.

The President does have the power to do something about the nation’s fair and affordable housing crisis. And he should quickly begin to work with Congress to pass comprehensive legislation with supply- and demand-side solutions to alleviate skyrocketing housing costs.

Rather than seeking to stifle an independent voice on the Board whose expertise is helping to address the kitchen table issues concerning the people of America, President Trump should pursue real solutions that will help everyday families afford housing and ensure housing choice.”
