NFHA Applauds Appointment of Demetria McCain to Serve as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity

Washington, D.C. — Lisa Rice, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), issued the following statement applauding Demetria McCain’s appointment to serve as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity:

“Demetria McCain, a seasoned fair housing and civil rights attorney who has worked vociferously to advance housing equity for everyone, is an excellent addition to HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.

“Ms. McCain was part of the leadership team that brought the successful Inclusive Communities Projectcase in which the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the ability of victims of discrimination to use disparate impact under the Fair Housing Act to fight housing discrimination and inequality.

“Through her work with the Inclusive Communities Project’s Mobility Assistance Program, Ms. McCain has helped more than 4,000 families move to low-poverty communities with ample resources — such as full-service grocery stores, health care facilities, well-resourced schools, and access to living wage jobs — that families need to thrive. At Inclusive Communities, she also developed a state-of-the-art program, Voices for Opportunity, to help train low-income renters and neighborhood groups on how to effectively advocate for fair housing and neighborhood equity.

“Ms. McCain is the quintessential fair housing advocate who, throughout her career, has worked with NFHA to fight injustice and expand opportunity for all people. We are excited to continue working with her to advance fair housing principles and ensure that every community is a place of opportunity, replete with the amenities and resources that people need to lead successful lives.”
