Washington, D.C. — Lisa Rice, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), issued the following statement on the passing of civil rights leader Charles Sherrod:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Charles Sherrod, who fought fiercely throughout his life to advance democracy and secure justice and liberation for everyone in our society. Sherrod was co-founder of the New Communities farming collective and land trust in Albany, Ga, helping to establish community land trusts as a means of economic empowerment, including fair housing. Today, we send our deepest love and condolences to his wife, civil rights champion Shirley Sherrod, who remains a leader in this work to ensure underserved communities can acquire and preserve home and land ownership and that underserved people have access to life-sustaining opportunities. Our thoughts, love, and sympathy also go out to Mr. and Mrs. Sherrod’s children, grandchildren, and family.”
