WEDNESDAY: NFHA to Testify at Congressional Oversight Hearing on Trump Administration’s Proposal to Gut Fair Housing Accountability
Groups to Present Evidence that New HUD Rule Eliminating Fair Housing Standard Would Harm Children
WASHINGTON, D.C. — At a hearing on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, the Congressional Committee on Oversight and Reform will hold the second hearing in a series about the harmful impacts of recent proposed rules from the Trump administration on children and families across the country. Jorge Soto, Director of Public Policy at the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), will testify to discuss how children and families would be harmed by a new proposed fair housing rule from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Titled “A Threat to America’s Children: The Trump Administration’s Proposal to Gut Fair Housing Accountability,” the hearing will include testimony on HUD’s latest attack against core civil rights protections under the Fair Housing Act. The proposed rule would effectively eliminate the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) mandate, which was put in place to ensure that all people — regardless of race, ethnicity, family status or disability — have choices about where to live, and that all neighborhoods are good places to live, regardless of the demographics of their residents.
“Access to fair housing determines where we live, which in turn determines the quality of education and health services our children have access to, among other resources. That’s why HUD’s proposed AFFH rule is so troubling,” said Lisa Rice, president and CEO of NFHA. “By seeking to dismantle the 2015 requirements put in place specifically to address discrimination and segregation, HUD’s plan could negatively impact the lives of millions of children.”
