The National Fair Housing Alliance Congratulates Rohit Chopra on His Confirmation to Lead Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Washington, D.C. — Today, Lisa Rice, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), released the following statement on the confirmation of Rohit Chopra to serve as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB):

“The National Fair Housing Alliance congratulates Rohit Chopra on his confirmation to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. His exceptional career in consumer protection well positions him to lead the agency and work on behalf of working families and uplift American consumers while providing oversight of the country’s financial sector.

“Mr. Chopra has long supported and actively engaged in the use of disparate impact analyses to identify and eliminate discriminatory lending practices that harm consumers. He has also advanced efforts to address and eliminate algorithmic and tech bias. Under his leadership, we urge the CFPB to ensure that the Office of Fair Lending has all of the necessary tools for fair lending enforcement, continue its vigorous support of Special Purpose Credit Programs, and ensure the Qualified Mortgage Rule appropriately emphasizes fair lending compliance and recognizes the dangers of pricing discrimination within U.S. financial markets.

“We look forward to working with Mr. Chopra to enforce our country’s fair lending laws, eliminate the use of discriminatory technologies, and ensure everyone has access to equitable economic opportunities, particularly those who have been disproportionately impacted by unjust and discriminatory policies.”
