National Fair Housing Alliance Issues Statement on the Supreme Court Striking Down the CDC Eviction Moratorium

Washington, D.C. — The Supreme Court’s decision last night to end the eviction moratorium will have severe consequences for millions of Americans and the economy. Nikitra Bailey, Senior Vice President of Public Policy for the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), issued the following statement today:

“The Supreme Court’s decision to end the federal eviction moratorium is disastrous for hardworking families throughout the country who have served as frontline workers during the global pandemic. As COVID-19 cases surge, more than 8 million households are behind on rent according to the most recent Pulse Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, and many families are at risk of being kicked out of their homes in the middle of the ongoing health and economic crises.

“To that end, Congress must take swift action to protect the most vulnerable in our society and ensure an equitable recovery. Reports indicate that just $4.7 billion of the $46.5 billion allocated for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program have been dispersed to families in need. While state and local municipalities must take action to speed up the process of distributing this funding to struggling renters, it is up to Congress to pass legislation to reinstate an eviction moratorium through December 31, 2021, and ensure the safety of the families facing eviction.

“With millions of families at risk of eviction, the time to act is now. Congress must act quickly to ensure no family is kicked out of their home.”
